Job Description: Food Bank Volunteer

The Food bank Volunteer will provide assistance in unloading, sorting and preparing the food bank which arrives weekly at Harmony House. She will also assist in distributing the food to residents in a respectful, fair process. She will work as part of the Harmony House team in a manner consistent with the agency’s philosophy, mission and policies, under the direction of the Women’s Advocate.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Help receive donations from the food bank truck and carry them into the office and basement
• Sort food donations and separate large amounts into more equitable ones as necessary
• Carry up empty boxes to recycling in parking lot
• Help maintain a hygenic atmosphere in the food distribution areas
• Help distribute the food to the women in a respectful, non-judgmental manner
• Put any left over items away and in fridge or freezer if necessary

Qualifications

• Must be over 18 years of age
• Willing to submit a recent Criminal Check
• Provide 2 references
• Ability to lift and move medium weight boxes and food items
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work as part of a team and independently
• Strong sense of diplomacy, confidentiality and sensitivity
• Minimum 4 1/2 hours per week up to 18 hours per month (Thursdays 10 am-2:30pm) for a period of one year
