Job Description: Legal Advocacy Volunteer
The Legal Advocacy Volunteer will work in direct contact with women who are survivors of violence. This role will include accompaniment to court and lawyers appointments, filling out forms and advocating on the women’s behalf. This position will require compulsory training hours before beginning direct contact with the women.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Fulfill training hours as determined by program co-ordinator
- Meet with women and provide sensitive support and empowerment around legal issues
- Communicate after accompaniments with the program co-ordinator to share information and debrief
Qualifications
- Must be over 18 years of age
- Willing to submit a recent Criminal Check
- Provide 2 references
- Good communication skills written and verbal
- Strong sense of diplomacy, confidentiality and sensitivity
- An understanding of the issues that face women who are survivors of violence or a willingness to learn about them
- A basic understanding of racism, feminism and anti-oppression work and a willingness to learn more
- Second language is an asset
- Must be willing to commit to 2-3 training hours per week for 2 months and to be available on call(as determined by availability and women’s needs) for a period of one year after training.
